THE LIES BEHIND SUNDAY WORSHIP EXPOSED

I am sure many sincere people out there are willing to do what is right, but they have not been taught correctly. So many Christians believe the ten commandments are still in effect but somehow believe that the apostles changed the fourth commandment—or relaxed it.

EXODUS 20:8-11

“8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

Out there, there is the idea that the apostles changed the fourth commandment through what they preached. How true is this? Does this agree with other parts of the Bible?  Christians are taught that Jesus rose on Sunday (supposedly), and therefore Sunday is the day of worship (day for holy convocation) given to Christians. Also, people are taught that Christians are to worship on Sunday to celebrate the supposed Sunday resurrection of Jesus and their redemption from sin.

Further, the early disciples held meetings on the first day of the week, and therefore people claim that this validates the change from Saturday Sabbath to Sunday—is this the truth? The native-born Israelites, some people claim and teach that they were given the Saturday weekly Sabbath to celebrate their exit from Egypt. What is the truth concerning all these?

Let us pause and ask some questions:

  1. The early disciples met and broke bread on the first day of the week, in some cases. Is it stated in the Bible that Christians now keep Sunday instead of the Saturday Sabbath? You will not find it in the Bible. The early disciples met and broke bread on the first day does not constitute changing the fourth commandment. The early disciples held meetings throughout the week.
  2. Where is it mentioned that God gave the Sabbath command to the Israelites to celebrate their exit from Egypt? Where? You will not find it in the Bible. The Sabbath command has always been there before the children of Israel went into slavery in Egypt; see our article on WHEN DID PEOPLE START KEEPING THE SABBATH.
  3. Where in the Bible is it stated that Jesus rose on Sunday and Sunday is now the new sabbath day? You will not see it anywhere in the Bible—it is false.

All the explanations for Sunday worship are manufactured and not from God. This short article will look at a single verse that exposes the lies behind Sunday worship.

MATTHEW 24:20

“But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:”

Let us read Matthew 24:14-11 to get the complete picture.

MATTHEW 24:14-22

“14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. 15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) 16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: 17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: 18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. 19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! 20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the Winter, neither on the sabbath day: 21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.”

The above passage focuses on future events that will occur during the second coming of Christ. These events are yet to happen. Let us go into a thinking room for the verse mentioned—Matthew 24:20.

THINKING ROOM FOR MATTHEW 24:20

MATTHEW 24:20

“But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:”

To understand what Jesus meant by flight, let us go to verse 16 “Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:”

The above passage is about fleeing (flight) to the mountains when the abomination that causes desolation commences (the Abomination of Desolation). It should be realised that no work is expected to be done on Sabbath days (weekly or high Sabbaths) and, as a result, services will be closed. If you are to flee somewhere and services are closed because of the Sabbath, how will you get there? It will not be easy. That is why Jesus asks his disciples to pray that their flight is not in the Winter (when it is cold and brutal to be outside) nor on the Sabbath (when most services are closed).

Let us ask some questions that will expose the lies behind the Sunday worship deception.

  1. Did Jesus expect that the apostles would change the fourth commandment before His second coming? According to Matthew 24:20, the answer is NO.
  2. Did Jesus expect that Sunday would replace Saturday Sabbath as the day of holy convocation before His second coming? According to Matthew 24:20, the answer is NO.
  3. If the Sabbath day command (the fourth commandment) has been done away with, why is Jesus saying that Sabbath will affect flight to the wilderness before His second coming?
  4. If the Saturday Sabbath would be replaced by Sunday as the day for holy convocation, why did Jesus tell his disciple to pray that their flight is not on Sabbath? Why not Sunday?

According to the words of Jesus, the Sabbath instruction (the fourth commandment) will still be in effect up to the time of His second coming. We can see that the arguments for Sunday as the day for worship (holy convocation) is garnished with lies, and it is not from God. Any explanation that does not agree with other parts of the Bible, people should reject. Don’t allow the Devil to place wool over your eyes using the supposed Jesus’ resurrection on Sunday and the disciples meeting on the first day as a chip to trick you into breaking the fourth commandment. Anyone willing to obey the plain truth found in the Bible will not find it hard to do so.

The teaching on Sabbath is defective in so far as it is built on the words of Jesus addressed to people who were and up till today subject to the Law of Moses which includes the ten commandments.

If your teaching is correct it would have been severally mentioned and emphasised by the apostles to the pioneer churches; this is not the case.

  • Hello! I just found your page today! I consider myself fairly new to all of this. I just recently learned this year that I am not a gentile. All my life (growing up in the church) I was taught that I was a gentile. So as I continue to study it turns on it’s head what I was taught in the Christian church (even my interpretation of the scripture and how I was taught to interpret it)…So the whole “Sabbath” day is new to me. I heard of the “Sabbath” in the Christian church but it wasn’t emphasized to keep it…So right now I am still a member of a “regular” Christian church. My question is-Is it wrong to attend church on Sundays? Lastly, I am really enjoying your page thus far. It helps break scripture down where I don’t feel overwhelmed. The irony is that I actually went to a Christian Bible college for my undergrad and had to take quite a few Bible classes, lol. I feel like I am having to go back and really look at what I was taught through the church. I kinda feel like I was taught more of a creed moreso than anything else. -CB

      Hi C.B.
Thanks for stopping by and we are glad you found this site useful. To answer your question, this is what worked for me; it may work for you. When I discovered the truth, I was still attending a regular mainstream Christian church. The wisdom that God gave me was to start keeping the Sabbaths while I was still attending church on Sundays. This is what I did exactly. I started keeping the Sabbaths (weekly and annual sabbath). Friday at sunset to Saturday at sunset, I observed the sabbath. I normally connect to an online service for sabbath service. However, I downgraded Sunday—I didn’t regard the day as a special day anymore. Although I was still attending Sunday service in the period of my transition, I work on Sundays and buy things on Sundays—Sunday becomes an ordinary day for me. The Sabbaths became special. If this sounds good for you, you can put yourself in transition mode and use this method while you seek the face of God to direct you where to fellowship. I will advise, don’t do things rashly but take time to ask God to direct your steps—where He wants you to fellowship. God wants people to be obedient to Him and I am sure He will direct you where to fellowship.
      thanks

  • Thank you for your response! I am starting to incorporate and honor Sabbath. Today (Saturday), I tried to be more intentional about it. Right now I am in search of a Bible other than kjv. Do you have any recommendations (in terms of the best version that is closest to Hebrew translation)?
